Dear Angel, now in heaven…

A year ago today, to the hour, Mama and I were getting ready to take you to Anti-Cruelty to lay you down to sleep.
Angel, both by name and intention, you were my first real death.
The grandparents I had, I never really knew. I was too young to remember them all that well. But, you…you were a constant presence for fourteen years. Always there. Always loving us. Always purring.
Your death brought new life, Sugar (the spitting image of you) and his sister, Hemingway.
You loved so unconditionally, so entirely, I had felt as if I had lost a best friend.
I still can’t watch the videos of your last day without breaking down, but today, I’ll embrace it.

Angel, we miss you. I’m so sorry we couldn’t save you. My big man, my little love, my soprano, my Angel.
